Swiss Banking Outlook Branchenforum 2026: Shared Perspectives on the Future of Switzerland’s Financial Centre

Around 60 representatives from banks, the media and Switzerland’s financial centre gathered in Zurich at the end of August for the inaugural Swiss Banking Outlook Branchenforum 2026. With this new format, the Swiss Bankers Association (SBA) has created a platform that makes the industry’s shared economic outlook visible and fosters dialogue among member institutions, experts and media representatives.

The Branchenforum builds on two established SBA studies: the Banking Barometer, which analyses developments in the Swiss banking sector and the economic environment, and the Swiss Banking Outlook, which twice a year presents the expectations of Chief Investment Officers (CIOs) and Chief Economists from member institutions regarding the future of Switzerland’s financial centre.

“The unique value of the Swiss Banking Outlook lies in the fact that it does not reflect the perspective of a single institution but rather brings together the views of numerous CIOs and Chief Economists from our member institutions. The result is a broadly based consensus forecast and a shared voice for the industry,” says Martin Hess, Chief Economist and Head of Economic Policy at the SBA and author of both studies.

The central theme of the first Branchenforum was how Switzerland’s financial centre can maintain its competitiveness in an increasingly challenging international environment. Martin Hess presented the key findings of the two publications before joining Anja Hochberg, CIO of Zürcher Kantonalbank, Renato Flückiger, CIO of Valiant Bank, and Anastassios Frangulidis, Head of Swiss Multi Asset at Pictet Asset Management, for a panel discussion moderated by Tanya König. Together they explored the opportunities, risks and future prospects of Switzerland’s banking centre.

“The Banking Barometer and the Swiss Banking Outlook are developed with the active participation of our member institutions. The Branchenforum complements these insights through direct exchange among industry representatives and also provides journalists with additional perspectives on the future of Switzerland’s financial center,” says Dagmar Laub, Head of Communications & Public Affairs at the SBA.

The discussion highlighted that the Swiss banking industry remains optimistic about the future despite a demanding environment. Legal certainty, political stability and the high level of trust in Swiss institutions were identified as key strengths of the financial centre. At the same time, the panellists agreed that digitalisation and artificial intelligence will play a decisive role in shaping the competitiveness of Switzerland’s banking sector in the years ahead.

Another key theme was wealth management, which continues to reach record levels. The panelists emphasised Switzerland’s attractiveness as a stable and reliable destination for assets from around the world. Trust, quality, legal certainty and long-term stability were identified as critical success factors.

Reflecting the different business models of their institutions, the panellists examined the outlook from a variety of perspectives. Nevertheless, there was broad agreement on the major challenges and opportunities ahead, whether in managing technological change, securing highly qualified talent or further developing the regulatory framework.

The inaugural Swiss Banking Outlook Branchenforum demonstrated the value of bringing together different voices from across the industry to discuss and contextualise the findings of the Banking Barometer and the Swiss Banking Outlook. The exchange underscored the benefits of combining data-driven insights with practical experience and diverse perspectives.

The SBA plans to hold the Branchenforum annually in collaboration with a member institution, further developing it as a platform for exchange, orientation and cross-industry perspectives on the future of Switzerland’s financial centre.
